  2. when we increase the temp. of the rod ...with linear expansion ,,area will also expand due to which stress also changes gradually so how can we take constant area and therefore const. stress

    As thermal expansion coefficient is a very small so for small temperature variations in the range where we take alpha constant we neglect the change in area as such a small change in area doesn't affect the stress by significant value...

    But if that's the case.. That alpha is small..then we should neglect linear expansion too N after all length varies with alpha n area with 2(alpha).. Please answer..

    My friends here we are talking about the cross sectional area and not the surface area. since expansion depends on initial length and since the radius is very small in comparison to the length of the rod therefore the increase in cross-sectional area can be safely assumed to be negligible.
